The Capitol Theatre opened on 1 September 1928, with programs of live vaudeville and motion pictures. The theatre was purchased in 1929 by Paramount Publix Corporation and the name was changed to the Paramount Theatre.

The building under went restoration in the mid 1970s, and again in 2003.

The theatre building was devastated between 11-13 June 2008 by flood waters that rose to 8.5 feet above the main stage, also damaging the restored Wurlitzer pipe organ console.
